NYSDOT crews prepared to keep up with snowstorm

LATHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Crews have spent the past several days getting ready for this weekend's winter storm. The New York State Department of Transportation will have more than 1,800 plows on the road.Workers at the Capital District shed in Latham completed final maintenance on the equipment Friday. We have the staff and the manpower in place," Josh Heller with the NYSDOT said. "We have the vehicles in place. Regardless of what ends up happening, we feel very confident that we'll be able to keep up with it and deal with it."Some plows were already out on Friday pretreating roads. Crews remind drivers to stay away from plows and give them time and space to do their jobs.

Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office promotes two

TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office welcomed two new leaders on Friday. Ryan Condo returned to the agency after leaving last year and was sworn in as deputy sheriff. Austin McGuire was promoted to sergeant. He previously served as the school resource officer in the Berlin Central School District. Sheriff Kyle Bourgault said he's grateful to have two experienced officers in leadership roles."It means better things for the community because we already have trained personnel in those positions, and it's just going to be, I think, the community's really going to benefit from it," he said.Friday's promotion ceremony was the first one since Bourgault was sworn in as sheriff last week. He replaced Patrick Russo, who retired after a 48-year career in law enforcement.

Blues prospect Jimmy Snuggerud shines in World Juniors, winning gold medal

LOUIS - The St. Louis Blues sent seven prospects to the 2024 World Juniors tournament, an annual international hockey event that features some of the most talented hockey players in the world under 20 years old. The International Ice Hockey Federation organizes the tournament and traditionally holds it from late-December of one calendar year to early-January of the next. The 2024 IIHF World Juniors just came to a close on Friday in Sweden with a championship for Team USA. One key player on the USA's title-winning squad was Jimmy Snuggerud, a 2022 first-round draft pick of the St. Louis Blues. Snuggerud, a right-winger by trait, scored USA's first goal of the tournament in a 4-1 victory over Norway on Dec. 26. Two days later, he followed up with a hat trick and an assist in USA's victory against Switzerland. Woman pushing baby in stroller attacked in Long Beach

Authorities in Long Beach are investigating an attack on a woman that was captured on home security video.The attack occurred in broad daylight Thursday in a residential area near East 21st Street and Locust Avenue.Video from two cameras shows a man carrying some type of rod approaching the woman, who was pushing a stroller, from behind. He strikes her in the head and then runs away, the video shows.Surveillance cameras show a man striking a woman with a rod in Long Beach on Jan. 4, 2024. (Juan C. Rivas)The woman screamed and recoiled but did not appear to lose consciousness. The extent of her injuries was not known.The child in the stroller did not appear to be harmed.The assailant was wearing a green sweatshirt with a dark-colored hoodie underneath and a baseball cap. ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves added depth to their bench on Friday by signing former New York Mets utility infielder Luis Guillorme to a $1.1 million, one-year deal.The 29-year-old Guillorme spent the last six seasons with the Mets, playing second base, shortstop and third base. He hit .224 in 54 games last season. He has a career .261 batting average. Guillorme appeared in a career-high 102 games in 2022, hitting .273 and making 61 starts at second base.Guillorme will compete with David Fletcher, acquired from the Los Angeles Angels on Dec. 8, for a bench spot.Atlanta traded infield prospect Vaughn Grissom to Boston for left-hander Chris Sale last week.
