Sheriff: Miami man charged with murder in Monroe County overdose death

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. (WSVN) – A 56-year-old Miami man who was arrested in April for leading an extensive fentanyl distribution ring in Monroe County has been charged with murder for his involvement in an overdose death, officials said.According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, a grand jury has charged Melvin Anthony Howard with first-degree murder for supplying the fentanyl that led to the overdose death of 53-year-old Amanda Roberts of Grassy Key on Sept. 2, 2022.In a related case, Alexis Joy Sather, 23, of Marathon, Florida, was arrested for murder in March 2023, allegedly connected to Roberts’ death. BSO search for subject caught on surveillance video punching elderly man outside Walmart in Lauderdale Lakes

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies are searching for a man who was caught on camera punching an elderly man as he was exiting a Walmart in Lauderdale Lakes. According to detectives with BSO’s Violent Crimes Unit, the attack happened on Oct. 11, just before 10 a.m. at the store located at 3001 N. State Road 7.“This is awful to witness. Nobody wants to see this in our society,” said BSO spokesperson Carey Codd. “To have someone walk up unprovoked, punch an elderly man in the face, that is completely uncalled for. It is cruel and it is unacceptable.”Surveillance footage shows the elderly man was seen leaving the store with a shopping bag in his hand. Abortions in the US rose slightly overall after post-Roe restrictions were put in place, study finds

The monthly averages overall from July 2022 through June 2023 were about 200 higher than in May and June 2022.The changes reflect major shifts after the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2022 handed down its Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling, overturning Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that had made abortion legal nationally. A federal appeals court said Wednesday that a former Yale University student expelled as the result of a since dismissed rape accusation can proceed with suits for defamation and other claims against his accuser and the school based on an analysis by the state Supreme Court.In a decision released Thursday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit reversed a district court decision dismissing expelled student Saifullah Khan’s defamation suit against his accuser, a former schoolmate identified as Jane Doe, and related claims against the university based on his expulsion.Khan denied the rape allegation but was suspended and ultimately expelled after the charge was upheld by Yale’s University-Wide Committee on Sexual Misconduct.Khan also was charged with four sexual assault crimes in state court based on the accusation. (AP) — Kansas officials are calling a massive computer outage that’s kept most of the state’s courts offline for two weeks a “security incident” and, while they have provided no explanation, experts say it has all the hallmarks of a ransomware attack.The disruption has left attorneys unable to search online records and forced them to file motions the old fashioned way — on paper. Courts are limping along, although the growing piles of paper are a mess that will have to be sorted and scanned eventually. “It’s really just slowed the whole system down,” said Chris Joseph, a Lawrence-based criminal defense attorney.
