GM says strike cost $1.1B, but it can absorb rising labor costs as it raises dividend

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors says pretax earnings took a $1.1 billion hit this year from a six-week strike by autoworkers, but the company expects to absorb the costs of a new contract and is even raising its dividend. The Detroit automaker on Wednesday reinstated its full-year earnings forecast that was withdrawn after the United Auto Workers began targeting the factories of Detroit automakers with strikes on Sept. 15. Those strikes continued at GM until Oct. 30.The company now predicts full-year net income of $9.1 billion to $9.7 billion, down from its previous outlook of $9.3 billion to $10.7 billion. But GM expects to generate more cash for the full year. Enbridge raising quarterly dividend next year as it expects business to grow

CALGARY — Enbridge Inc. is raising its dividend as it expects its business to continue to grow next year.The company also reaffirmed its full year guidance for 2023 for earnings before interest, income taxes and depreciation and distributable cash flow.Enbridge says it will pay a quarterly dividend of 91.5 cents per share, effective with the dividend payable on March 1, 2024, up from 88.75 cents per share.The increased payment to shareholders will come as the company expects 2024 adjusted EBITDA on its base business to total $16.6 billion to $17.2 billion. A driver from Caledon is facing stunt driving charges after he was caught going nearly 100 km/h over the speed limit.In a post on X, Peel Regional Police say officers stopped the driver near Queen Street East and Goreway Drive in Brampton on Monday night.Police say the 26-year-old driver was pulled over just after snow began to fall. World economy will slow next year because of inflation, high rates and war: OECD

The global economy, which has proved surprisingly resilient this year, is expected to falter next year under the strain of wars, still-elevated inflation and continued high interest rates.The Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development estimated Wednesday that international growth would slow to 2.7 per cent in 2024 from an expected 2.9 per cent pace this year. Round Rock looks at future of housing as city expects continued growth

ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) -- The City of Round Rock says it has enough space to build somewhere between 25,000 and 143,000 new housing units in the future to accommodate the expected population growth. That's according to a study conducted by the city's Planning and Development services department. Round Rock's population grew by almost 5,200 people in 2023 and is expected to add another 65,000 people by 2040. It's that kind of growth that spurred the density study to see where the city could continue to build and grow.
