TORONTO — Canadian film and television workers are feeling the sting of twin strikes by Hollywood writers and actors.Vancouver-based Derek Baskerville, who rents costumes mostly to U.S. film shoots, says he laid off a part-time worker last week and has scaled back the hours of other staff as work dried up.Toronto writer-director V.T. Man facing more than 200 charges for locker room thefts at Durham community centres

Police have arrested a man accused of stealing from lockers at community centres across Durham region and then shopping with stolen credit and debit cards.Durham Regional police arrested the suspect, 43-year-old Jeremy Marcoux of Oshawa, last Wednesday.He’s facing more than 200 theft and fraud-related charges.“The suspect would enter the locker rooms, stealing the contents of the lockers, and use stolen credit and debit cards to purchase items,” police said in a release.Police say Marcoux was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

(AP) — Republican lawmakers violated the Tennessee Constitution when they passed a law this spring giving the state attorney general more authority to argue certain death penalty cases, according to a judge’s ruling Monday.The new law allows the attorney general to step in and take over post-conviction capital cases. But Shelby County Judge Paula Skahan said that’s unconstitutional because it removes the power of the locally elected district attorney to argue them. The state attorney general is an appointed position, not elected.The office of Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti said it will appeal Monday’s decision, which affects death row inmate Larry McKay’s motion for another trial based on new evidence. ST. LOUIS (AP) — A suburban St. Louis police officer charged with assault and kidnapping for allegedly beating a man until his jaw broke was arrested Monday, St. Louis County police said. The charges stem from a July 4 arrest that Northwoods officer Samuel Davis made without informing dispatchers or writing a report, according to the probable cause statement. St. Louis County police said Davis, 26, handcuffed a man, then turned off his own body camera before driving him to a secluded spot outside the north St. Louis town. Davis then pepper-sprayed the man, beat him with a baton and told him not to return to Northwoods.A witness called 911 after finding the bloodied man. WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday urged the Senate to move forward with votes on more than 60 diplomatic nominations, including 38 ambassadors, that have been stalled due to objections by individual lawmakers. In a letter to all 100 senators and in public comments, Blinken said delays in confirmation votes for these nominees constitute a national security risk.
