Supreme Court rules in favor of Black Alabama voters in unexpected defense of Voting Rights Act

By MARK SHERMAN (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a surprising 5-4 ruling in favor of Black voters in a congressional redistricting case from Alabama, with two conservative justices joining liberals in rejecting a Republican-led effort to weaken a landmark voting rights law.Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh joined with the court’s liberals in affirming a lower-court ruling that found a likely violation of the Voting Rights Act in an Alabama congressional map with one majority Black seat out of seven congressional districts in a state where more than one in four residents is Black. The state now will have to draw a new map for next year’s elections. The decision was closely watched for its potential effect on control of the closely divided U.S. House of Representatives. Wakefield man charged in alleged terrorist financing scheme

A Wakefield man has been charged with allegedly providing support to terrorism in the form of a string of gift cards to a supposed ISIS agent for resale on the dark web, according to federal authorities.Mateo Ventura, 18, was charged with one count of concealing terrorist financing by the US. Attorney’s office in Boston.Ventura is due to appear in federal court in Worcester.According to the charging documents Ventura provided  “multiple gift cards to an individual he believed was an ISIS supporter.”In reality, he was communicating with an undercover FBI agent, according to federal documents.According to the FBI, Ventura allegedly stated that he wanted the proceeds to go to ISIS “for war on kuffar,” (disbelievers).”According to court documents, Ventura provided a total of $1,670 in gift cards to the agent: $965 as a juvenile and $705 after his 18th birthday. Sheriff: White Florida woman claims Black neighbor she shot and killed threatened her first

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — A white Florida woman accused of shooting and killing her Black neighbor told investigators she had been threatened by the victim in the months before the slaying, according an arrest report released Thursday.The report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office came out as Susan Louise Lorincz made her initial appearance in court Thursday. She appeared via video hookup wearing a dark protective vest. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 89 points, or 0.3%, at 33,754, as of 11:25 a.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite was 0.8% higher. The majority of stocks in the S&P 500 and across Wall Street were falling, though, after a report showed the highest number of workers applied for unemployment benefits since October 2021. Five people were killed in a shooting Thursday in an Arab town in northern Israel, police said, the latest in a wave of criminal violence tearing through the country’s Palestinian communities. ‘Belligerent’ Ontario man charged for starting fire during active ban

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a man after he was involved in having a backyard fire in northeastern Ontario during an active fire ban.OPP said members from its East Algoma Detachment were called to assist a local fire department at a residence in the Town of Blind River, Ont. in the Algoma region.It’s alleged a person at the residence was belligerent and upset at fire department members because they couldn’t have a fire during the ban.Natural Resources and Forestry Minister Graydon Smith confirmed this week that there are fire restrictions in most of the province’s eastern, central, northeast and northwest regions.
