Lawrence man drowns trying to save child, child’s mother from fast-moving river in NH

A Massachusetts man drowned in New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon while trying to rescue his wife and stepson from a fast-moving river.New Hampshire state troopers responding to a possible drowning in the Swift River in Albany around 12:33 p.m. learned that a family from Massachusetts was on the Passaconaway roadside when a mother and child became stuck in an area with fast-moving water, according to police.Police said the man attempted to rescue his family members and ultimately became stuck in the current himself.The mother and child got to shore and bystanders helped get the father to shore, where they performed CPR. Man dies, others taken to hospital after crash in Brookline

A man died and several other people were taken to the hospital Sunday after a crash on Route 9 in Brookline, police said. Brookline police in a statement said crews responded to the area of Route 9 and Warren Street around 2:40 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a multi-vehicle crash with serious injuries. On scene, police said, officers found one vehicle had hit two other cars before veering off the road and hitting a tree. Police said the driver of the first vehicle and his wife were trapped in their car and had to be extricated by responding firefighters. The driver was pronounced dead, according to police. His wife was taken to a hospital where she was in stable condition and expected to survive as of Sunday night. Three other people from the other cars that were hit were taken to the hospital with what police said were “much less serious injuries.” While the incident remains under investigation, Brookline police on Monday said preliminary informati...

SAN DIEGO -- As Tropical Storm Hilary continues its northward movement, the storm continues to batter San Diego County with heavy rain and gusty winds.These conditions have had widespread impacts on residents Sunday afternoon, including power outages for thousands of San Diego Gas & Electric customers. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Tropical Storm Franklin churned through the Caribbean Sea on Monday as authorities in Haiti and the Dominican Republic warned residents to prepare for floods and landslides.The storm was located some 240 miles (390 kilometers) south of Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic and had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph). It was moving west at 6 mph (9 kph) and was forecast to make a sharp turn north late Monday or early Tuesday.Franklin is expected to strengthen before making landfall late Tuesday in Hispaniola, the island shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The storm is forecast to drop up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain in both countries, with up to 15 inches (38 centimeters) in isolated areas.
